Gordon Bennet race 1903
The Gordon Bennett race, first held in 1900 was instituted by the American newspaper proprietor, James Gordon Bennett. On 1 July 1903 the race was held in Ireland. The total race distance was approximately 551 miles. Crosby’s illustration shows Camille Jenatzy — the ultimate winner in his 60 hp Mercedes — giving the driver of the Panhard & Levassor just astern a few breath-taking moments.
